Just a very quick post to let you all know that my dad is in the hospital. He went in very early Thursday morning with severe stomach pains. They admitted him and introduced a tube into his stomach through his nose to pump it after finding a very large mass with fluid around it. We were told to hope for the best but expect the worst. The doctor seemed to think it was stomach cancer. My mom asked him what we should tell my brother who lives in New Jersey and the doctor said "I'd tell him to come home for a visit" in very somber tones. On Friday, they moved my dad to ICU and put him on a ventilator to help him breathe, as he was having a lot of trouble getting any oxygen. Yesterday (Saturday), they did an endoscopy and found a very large ulcer in the base of his stomach partially covering the opening to the small intestines. The ulcer was perforated and allowing food into his abdomen. They immediately went to surgery to remove the part of his stomach and intestines with the ulcer. He's now back in ICU and was stable this morning.
Its still a very long road ahead. He will be in the hospital for at least another week and they still have to biopsy the ulcer to see if its cancerous. The good news is that the surgeon saw no other signs of cancer in his liver, pancreas or other important organs. However, they do still have to check for cancer as an ulcer left this long usually turns into cancer. We're very hopeful though. I'll keep you updated when I know more! Please keep my dad in your prayers/thoughts.
